Position Description

Rabbi of the Ohel Leah Synagogue, Hong Kong

Outline

Hong Kong's historic Ohel Leah Synagogue, a Modern Orthodox Synagogue which serves the diverse Jewish community in Hong Kong and many visitors from around the world, is looking for an inspirational and charismatic new Rabbi.

The ideal candidate should be able to provide dynamic leadership to the existing congregation. He should also be able to develop the synagogue to its full potential as a welcoming place for daily prayer as well as a center of Torah learning for all ages and a focal point for all Jews living in Hong Kong. Through active participation in services, community activities and education programmes the Rabbi is expected to attract Jews from a variety of backgrounds both living in Hong Kong and visiting from overseas.

Requirements

Professional Qualifications:

o Over 4 years experience as a community Rabbi
o Smicha from a reputable institution
o A secular university degree would be an advantage
o Able to read from the Torah on Shabbat 2-3 times a month
o Able to read Megillat Esther on Purim
o Able to lead the davening for any service at short notice
o International exposure
o Fluent in English and Hebrew (other languages an advantage)

Main Responsibilities

The Rabbi of the Ohel Leah Synagogue provides leadership of the entire congregation numbering approximately 200 families and single adults.
The Rabbi is responsible to The Incorporated Trustees of the Jewish Community of Hong Kong (the "Trustees"), the Trustees and Administrators of the Ohel Leah Synagogue Charity, and shall follow normative Modern Orthodox Halachic guidelines in the undertaking of his responsibilities.


Staff of the Rabbi

The Rabbi is responsible for all staff working with him at the Synagogue including but not limited to the following:
Assistant Rabbi,
Secretary,
Mashgiach,
Programme Directors and/or other assistants of special programming.
